Dissent and Patriotism
Are patriotism and dissent mutually exclusive? Consider the greatest patriots of our nation, the founding fathers, who dissented the oppression of British rule; in 1776, support for American freedom was an act of dissent. True patriotism is more than following our leaders blindly and waving a flag. Patriotism is a commitment to speaking out and standing tall when those in power lead our nation astray.
From the mouth of former Republican president, Theodore Roosevelt: "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."
