"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." Theodore Roosevelt

Catch-22

Oh, what to do...
Venezuela's ambassador to the United States has blasted a call by a conservative U.S. televangelist for the assassination of President Hugo Chavez. Pat Robertson's statement "demands the strongest condemnation by the White House," Ambassador Bernardo Alvarez said Tuesday. He also wants the U.S. to guarantee Chavez's safety during any future visit to the U.S., including an upcoming trip to the United Nations in New York. [...] Alvarez said, "Mr. Robertson's call that U.S. covert operatives murder President Chavez is a call to terrorism." [...] Alvarez noted that Robertson has close ties to U.S. President George W. Bush, and that his remarks can't be brushed off as those of a mere private citizen.
What a bind for George... Alienate a prominent figure of his wingnut base, or jeopardize relations with an oil providing nation. Decisions, decisions.
